Bedroom Rugs: Placement That Actually Works

Bedroom Rugs: Placement That Actually Works

Quick answer: Three layouts cover almost every bedroom: runners on each side of the bed (softness exactly where feet land), a 36-79 inch round rug at the foot or corner, or an area rug slid two-thirds under the bed frame from the foot.

Space Best format Size to start with
Living room seating group Area rug 60" x 96" (5x8), front legs on
Under a coffee table Area rug 35" x 59" or larger
Beside the bed Runner 20" x 60" per side
Foot of the bed / reading corner Round rug 47"–60" diameter
Hallway / galley kitchen Runner Longest that leaves 4–6" floor each side
Under a pedestal table Round rug 72" or 79" diameter
Entry / door Doormat 24" x 35" for double doors, 16" x 24" single

Bedrooms reward soft landings: the first thing your feet touch in the morning should not be cold hardwood. Three layouts cover almost every bedroom.

1. Runners beside the bed

The simplest upgrade: a runner along each side of the bed. Our lengths run 20" x 60" up to 35" x 106" — pick one roughly the length of the bed. This layout costs less than one big rug and puts the softness exactly where feet land.

2. A round rug at the foot or corner

A round rug (36" to 79" diameters) breaks up the rectangles a bedroom accumulates — bed, dresser, nightstands. Center it at the foot of the bed or under a corner reading chair.

3. Area rug two-thirds under the bed

The classic look: slide an area rug under the bed from the foot, stopping before the nightstands, so it frames the bed on three sides. With our largest at 5' x 8', this suits full and queen beds best.

Which designs sleep well

Soft florals and muted vintage patterns keep the room calm — browse floral and vintage-style. The flat washable surface matters here too: no pile to trap dust where you breathe all night, and spot-cleaning is a damp cloth away.

Pick the landing zones first

The useful part of a bedroom rug is the surface your feet reach when you get out of bed. Mark those landing zones with tape before choosing a layout. A large rug can sit beneath the lower portion of the bed, while two runners can provide the same side comfort with less covered floor.

Placement options by bed layout

Rug under the lower two-thirds

Keep the nightstands on the floor and slide the rug beneath the bed far enough to extend visibly at both sides and the foot.

Two bedside runners

Center one runner along each open side. Match their top and bottom edges so the room feels balanced.

Round rug beside the bed

A round rug can define a reading chair or soften one open side in an asymmetrical room.

Bedroom measurement checklist

  • Open closet, bathroom, and storage-bed drawers.
  • Include the bed frame, not only the mattress.
  • Keep exposed corners outside the doorway-to-bed walking line.
  • Check whether a rug pad changes door clearance.

Bedroom rug FAQ

Do nightstands need to sit on the rug?

No. Keeping them off the rug often makes sizing easier and prevents uneven furniture when the rug is low profile.

Should the rug reach the headboard?

Only when using a large all-furniture-on layout. For most bedrooms, starting below the nightstands uses the rug where it is felt and seen.
