The two rules that matter
- Front legs on the rug. The sofa and chairs should each have at least their front legs on the rug. This visually ties the seating into one group.
- Leave a border. Aim for 10–18 inches of bare floor between the rug's edge and the walls so the room doesn't look carpeted wall-to-wall.
Making a 5' x 8' work
Our largest area rug runs 60" x 96" — a true 5x8. In a small or mid-size living room it anchors the seating group front-legs-on. Start with the seating-group width
Measure from the outside edge of the left chair or sofa to the outside edge of the right seat. A front-legs-on rug should reach beneath both sides of that group. If it stops inside the furniture legs, the arrangement can look disconnected even when the rug is technically centered.
Next measure from the sofa front to the farthest chair front. This second dimension tells you whether the rug can support every seat while leaving comfortable space around the coffee table.
Placement by living-room layout

Center the rug on the conversation area. Put the sofa's front legs and both chair fronts on it. Keep roughly equal rug exposure on the left and right so one chair does not appear detached.
Sectional sofa
Use the sectional's inside corner as the visual anchor. The rug can slide under the front legs of both sections, but it should not disappear entirely beneath the chaise. Tape the outline and confirm that the coffee table has breathing room on every side.
Open-plan room
Treat the rug as a boundary between the seating zone and dining or kitchen zone. Align one rug edge with the sofa rather than the nearest wall. A clear walkway outside the rug makes the zoning easier to read.
Small living room
